Emily's Story
New Mercies volunteers are there for parents during their hardest moments. They offer not just practical help but a listening ear and a source of encouragement. Our volunteers walk with parents in both victories and setbacks. Often, the path forward is uncertain, but we commit to being there, trusting that God’s hand is at work even when we can’t see the full picture. For each parent, volunteers provide a sense of community rooted in the belief that transformation can happen by the grace of God, one step at a time.
The Beginning of the Story
When Emily* was first referred to us, she was nine months pregnant and living in her car with her one-year-old daughter, Kinsley*. She was exhausted and overwhelmed by her circumstances. New Mercies was able to step in quickly, a testament to the Church’s commitment to families in Elkhart County. Staff and volunteers arranged for a Host Family to care for Kinsley while Emily gave birth to her son, Julian*. You can read more about this first hosting in a previous post.
However, after her son was born, Emily’s journey took a challenging turn as she faced struggles with mental health and addiction, which required support beyond what New Mercies could offer. This meant stepping back temporarily to ensure Emily and her children could access the specific support they needed to prioritize their safety and well-being. Though heart-wrenching for the volunteers who had come to love and care deeply for Emily, they trusted that God was still at work, even in the difficult moments.

Reaching a Turning Point
Months later, Emily began to turn her life around. She graduated from a sober living facility and reconnected with her Family Coach and the Host Mom who had originally cared for her daughter. They visited Emily, sharing coffee and words of encouragement. The Host Mom began going through a Bible study with Emily over the phone, offering her ongoing support and companionship. Through this connection, Emily began to experience a stability and care she had never known before.

A New Experience of Grace
Though she had burned many bridges in her life, the Host Mom's dedication and support reminded Emily that healing was possible. For the first time, Emily felt God’s grace and mercy surrounding her, showing her she wasn’t alone. “Her story isn’t done,” Emily’s Family Coach recently shared with us. Emily’s ongoing journey is a beautiful reminder of how God’s grace and power can restore lives and relationships. It encourages us to trust in His work, knowing He is always writing a greater story.
